Description

TABI takes you from your first hiragana to reading a menu, counting change, understanding the konbini clerk, reading street signs, and picking the right train. It has eleven stations, unlocked in order, each with two trials and a test from the Stationmaster (駅長). Pass it and the station's eki stamp goes in your stamp book. SHARE STAMP turns any stamp into an image for Mastodon or any other app.

A day takes about five minutes. One button shows you up to eight new items, then asks about twenty questions from everything you have met so far. Finishing it marks the day, whatever your score. There are no streaks. Missed days cost nothing and nothing decays while you are away.

What the stations cover:

• Hiragana and katakana, with a mnemonic for every character and drills aimed at the look-alikes
• Numbers, prices, clock times, and counting people versus things
• Thirty survival phrases and the situations they belong to
• Ordering food, reading menus, and the questions every register clerk asks
• Fifty-eight sign kanji: exits, toilets, push and pull, open and closed, no photos, hot and cold
• Platform boards, train types, IC cards, and following spoken directions
• Particles and sentence building
• A listening log for hours of Japanese heard
• The first 104 kanji

Question types: multiple choice, typed answers in romaji (IME spellings accepted) or kana, listening, matching, tile building, and rendered menus and platform boards. Wrong answers show the rule you missed.

Audio uses the Japanese voice from your phone's text-to-speech engine. With one installed, some questions play the sound first and show the text after you answer. Hold a speaker button to hear a line slower. If none is installed, the app tells you how to add one. Every reading is printed, so nothing depends on audio.

TABI requests no INTERNET permission. Progress stays on the device and backs up to a file or as text.

Free software under GPL-3.0-or-later.

What’s new (2.3.0)

A run cut short now counts at the next launch. Importing a backup asks first, and if your save does not load, Progress offers it back. TABI opts out of Android backup and phone-to-phone transfer, so SAVE FILE moves your progress to a new phone. New rule notes for particles and kanji readings, ✓ and ✕ marks on answers, proper names for the kana marks, and capitals across the app. Fixes for kanji examples, answers with the same meaning, and the こんにちは reading.
